Dear Mom,

Don’t worry, I‘m not using one of the hospital photos you would hate.

Since we talked last night and this morning then watched you peacefully move to what’s next, you’ve been here with me, my Mother in Heaven.

You know how me and dad are. Always needing to share what we feel instead of keeping it private like you. Today is definitely one of those days where I need to share.

I need to shout from the rooftops that I love you mom!

It was so nice to have a last chance to hug you, kiss you, hold and squeeze your hand. It was so nice to tell you how much we love and appreciate you. If you would have slipped away some night without notice, you and we would all still know these things. But it was so nice.

My mom and me in Memphis near July 1974

We’ve been exchanging love through the eyes for a long time. This is my favorite picture with you. Then, I was the one with tired eyes focused on you. Today, your medicated, ready-to-be-done eyes were the tired ones as our souls connected.

Thank you mom. Or as you would say,

Thank You, Thank You, My Heart Sings!

Which doesn’t even begin to express anything in relation to what I feel. But I need to stop crying, blow my nose, and go meet with dad and siblings to help plan your funeral.

We listened when you said you wanted your casket painted periwinkle blue with sunflowers, dandelions, and whatever else your grandkids want to paint on it!

I love you, I love you, I love you!

Love,

Your Joseph
